Re: 2017-2018 School Calendar
Dear MSAD 11 Students and Families:
I want to update you on a matter regarding the 17-18 school calendar. State law requires that all students attend school for a minimum of 175 days and seniors specifically are required to attend for 170 days. Due to the current number of snow days (six) called this year, seniors are currently out of compliance with the required 170 school days. To bring them in compliance a modification to this school year’s calendar has been made.
During the March School Board meeting, the Board voted on how to resolve this issue. The Thursday, March 15 and Thursday, March 29 Early Release days will now be full student days. On the Wednesday, May 9th Early Release Day, students in Grades K-12 will be released one hour later than usual - high school and middle school students will be dismissed around 12:30 pm, elementary students will be dismissed at 1:30 pm and there will be no afternoon pre-kindergarten classes.
As a result of these modifications, the current last day of school will be Friday, June 15, 2018. Should there be any additional snow days, students in Grades K-11 will make them up the following week and the schedules for seniors will be reviewed for additional modification.
I recognize that this change in the calendar may cause a hardship for some families, but it is our hope that extending early release days to full student days will have the least impact. If as a result of this new calendar you need to dismiss your child early due to a previous appointment or commitment, our school offices will be flexible and accommodate all family needs.
