Technology Integrated Mathematics
Enhancing
Elementary Mathematics Teaching & Learning
During the past several years, access to technology in the classroom has increased significantly, as has its role in mathematics teaching and learning. This technology includes a range of hardware and software applications including personal computers, graphing calculators, hand-held devices such as personal digital assistants (PDAs), probes, sensors, specialized software, and online resources and tools. (Masalski & Elliott, 2005) In fact, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) states that "technology is essential in teaching and learning mathematics; it influences the mathematics that is taught and enhances students' learning."(NCTM, 2000, p. 24)
The online resources that are available have grown from static text content to interactive applets and tools that provide opportunities to visualize, conceptualize, reason and problem-solve. Many tools provide graphical representations quickly and easily allowing students to predict and check multiple examples and/or ideas in a very short period of time. (Sutton & Krueger, 2002) There are many sites that host these online tools. Descriptions of many of these websites are listed below:
Interactive Math Applets
MISTM Math Portal - this website is extremely useful for finding math tools on the web that align with the Maine Learning Results. These sites are more useful in grades 4-12.
Hundreds Chart Calculator - this was shown to Grade 3 teachers by Pam Buffington on September 25, 2007.
National Library of Virtual Manipulatives

A Collection of Math Websites
I want to know more about the curriculum and the standards:
http://standards.nctm.org/document/chapter3/index.htm
Interested in reading about the National Math Standards(National Council of Teachers of Mathematics)? This site will give you a lot of information!
http://www.alliance.brown.edu/investigations/
The site is valuable for other educators and parents who need more information about this elementary mathematics program. Since this site is an open forum for teachers' and others' opinions and ideas, the views represented here do not necessarily represent the views of the site's collaborators.
http://investigations.terc.edu/
You can find all the information from the hand outs at this web site plus a lot more. This is the Investigations home page loaded with information about the program.
http://my.nctm.org/eresources/school_level.asp?lv=1
This site is rich with resources about teaching mathematics to elementary school aged children! From activities to practice and theory. It’s all here!
I would like to play some of the Investigation games online:
http://illuminations.nctm.org/tools/factor/index.html
Factor Game engages students in a friendly contest in which winning strategies involve distinguishing between numbers with many factors and numbers with few factors. Students are then guided through an analysis of game strategies and introduced to the definitions of prime and composite numbers.
http://standards.nctm.org/document/eexamples/chap5/5.1/index.htm
Fraction Track:
This is a game played often in fifth grade when learning about equivalent fractions. You can play this game interactively online, too!
I really would like to find a site that practices math facts:
http://82.165.229.218/index.php?page=11
em>This is a site where you can enter the type of facts you want to practice along with the level of difficulty.
http://www.aplusmath.com/Games/index.html
This site offers a variety of games such as Matho and Hidden Pictures, which let you practice your math facts.
http://www.funbrain.com/math/index.html
This is a baseball game which helps you to practice those facts. It’s a big hit with many kids!
http://www.quia.com/shared/math/
This is a list of the top 20 games that are fun math games to play such as multiplication concentration.
http://www.mathfactcafe.com/home/
At the math Fact Cafe you can create your own flash cards, practice with cards already made or sit back relax, and play a game.
I’d like to find challenging activities to try at home with my child:
http://illuminations.nctm.org/swr/index.asp
i-Maths are online, interactive, multimedia math investigations. All i-Maths are built around interactive math applets, and some also include video clips. There are two lengths of i-Maths: single-day and multi-day, as identified below.
http://www.pbs.org/teachersource/math.htm
Just type in grade level and topic and you’ll find a wealth of interactive math activities you can do!
I’d like some great problem solving activities & brain teasers:
http://www.eduplace.com/math/brain/ A great place to find a brainteaser each week with varying levels of difficulty!
This is a great site for students who might want more of a challenge. Each week problems are posted for students to solve. There are many levels to try.
Some great brainteasers, but you have to put up with some annoying advertising first.
http://www.kidinfo.com/Mathematics/Mathematics.html
Go here to find a list of much of what is listed here! It’s a great resource for your child to use! Games, math help, it’s all here.
http://directory.google.com/Top/Games/Puzzles/Brain_Teasers/Mathematical/
