Family Fun Day was so much fun at Laura Richards School! Families of our PK students enjoyed making scarecrows, decorating pumpkins, sponge painting leaf collages, and decorating fall bags with stickers and drawings. The event was held in our gym where we had plenty of room to spread out. What a great celebration of our fall season and family togetherness!! Thank you to Mrs. Ellis, Mrs. Duquette, Mrs. Hall, and Mrs. Moore for all their hard work planning and organizing this wonderful event!

Look what hatched in Mrs. Duquette's class! Baby chicks! Students were totally engaged in "life science" as they observed the chicks hatch. Later students were even able to gently hold the chicks and feel how soft they were! Thank you especially to Mrs. Hall for helping to care for the chicks!!

The 4 year old Program went on a field trip in September to a corn maze at Alden Longfellow's Greenhouses. We had a beautiful September afternoon. We had a ride to the field on a hay ride pulled by a tractor. We went through the corn maze many times and then enjoyed a snack on the lawn. We had apple cider and fresh apples. We had a wonderful time!!
We have spent the past week learning about pumpkins. We read books about how pumpkins grow and about what happens to pumpkins after they decompose. We worked in small groups and scooped out all of the seeds and put them in a plate. We picked different shapes and carves faces on our pumpkins. We then named our pumpkins. We weighed the seeds in a scale to see which groups had the most. We topped our morning off by making pumpkin pancakes!!
Our class learned about spider this week. Students learned that spiders have 8 legs, 4 on each side! Then we celebrated by becoming spiders! We paraded down the halls of LER!

Kindergarteners in Mrs. Carey's and Ms. Coolidge's class celebrated "Polar Express Day" by wearing their pajamas to school. Mrs. Moody (The Elf) was invited to read the book, The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg, to the children. In the story all the children ride the "Polar Express" to the North Pole to visit Santa Claus. Inside the train the children enjoyed hot cocoa and chocolate nuggets. So...a kindergarten friend thought to bring in chocolate nuggets from Kennebec Chocolates to share with all the students. Students then lined up, held hands, and "choo chooed" down the hallway as they pretended to become the "Polar Express". All the children truly enjoyed experiencing this piece of literature which also earned the Caldecott Award!
Mrs. Carey's and Ms. Coolidge's classes completed their studies of Thanksgiving by hosting a Thanksgiving Feast in Laura Richards' gymnasium. Prior to the feast, students enjoyed center activities in the gym, such as making music with instruments like the Native Americans would have used, fishing for letters, building log forts, and making bead necklaces. The students also enjoyed making pumpkin bread and trail mix for the feast.
Then, it was time to "set sail" with a paper version of the Mayflower! Mrs. Moody, dressed as a turkey, led the procession of Pilgrims and Native Americans through the hall to the gym where they danced to the "Chicken Dance" and "feasted" on turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and pie.
Enjoy the pictures!
The week of October 15th was Fire Prevention Week. Laura Richard's Kindergarten classes learned about the dangers of playing with fire from a very special guest, Smokey the Bear!!
Look at our Kindergarteners on parade! They all made pattern designs on sandwich boards. Students made AB patterns, hopscotch patterns, and snake patterns using their names, stamps, sponge paints, and shape cut outs. On the day of their parade, students wore clothing that had patterns on them. Students marched through the halls and visited many classrooms. We all enjoyed their enthusiasm!! Being able to recognize patterns and continue them is one of the kindergarten math skills. Awesome job Kindergarten!

Mrs. Carey's class enjoyed learning about goods and services that come from a farm. Students absolutely loved having a farm in their classroom to experience being farmers! Learning outcomes for Farmer MacCarey's students centered around naming animals and fruits and vegetables that would be at the farm. Students visited staff members around the building on ponies to take orders for farm produce. Students had to write down orders and add up how much the order would cost the customers. Later, students delivered the produce to their happy customers! Thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped students to experience this wonderful learning!
In David Kirk's storybook, Miss Spider's Tea Party, a lonely spider wishes to have a tea party with some insects. But the insects are all afraid that she will eat them. Then one day she helps a moth whose wings become too damp to fly. They snack on tea and pie until the moth can once again fly away. He quickly tells his insect friends how Miss Spider helped him, and they all join her for a lovely tea party!
Mrs. Carey's class reenacted Miss Spider's tea party by they themselves becoming spiders and insects! They practiced having nice table manners as they served each other tea! How lovely indeed!
"It was a leprechaun I tell ye!!"
Mrs. Carey's kindergarten class was missing their special mouse from their classroom! Following a scavenger hunt of clues around the school written on shamrocks, Mrs. Carey's students finally found him in Mrs. Moody's office along with...GOLD! There was also a box of Lucky Charms cereal filled with objects that students would use for their math centers! Was this trickery really the doings of a leprechaun...or was it this staff person in disguise?! Hmmmm....
Mrs. Carey's Circus is looked forward to by the entire school every year. This year's show was SPECTACULAR!! The students worked on building gross motor skills by practicing and performing circus acts. There is so much planning, energy, and preparation put into this event and our entire school community applauds Mrs. Carey's class! BRAVO!!!

Miss Whitman's class enjoyed investigating and creating designs using pattern blocks and geoblocks. Students used their imaginations and knowledge about shapes to make these creative designs. Using blocks to investigate and predict the results of combining, dividing, and changing shapes is one of the geometry expectations for first grade. Looks like these first graders successfully mastered this objective! Nice job Miss Whitman's class!
Look who showed up as twins today! We just had to have our picture taken!! Aren't we stylish!!

Mrs. Malcolm's class enjoyed a fall book entitled, The Lonely Scarecrow. After listening to the story, students created their own scarecrows. How cute! But wait...look inside! They also had to sequence the story by writing what happened at the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Nice job Mrs. Malcolm's class! Happy Fall!

Second graders at LER have observed tiny caterpillars grow, hang as a "J", change into chrysalises, and, finally, emerge as Painted Lady Butterflies! This lesson engages students into life science as they get to watch "up close" the life cycle of this organism. Students certainly celebrated when these beautiful butterflies were released!

During the months of September and October second graders in Mrs. Canning's class experienced the life cycle of the Painted Lady Butterfly. Here is a second grader enjoying a caterpillar she found. I wonder what it will look like as a butterfly...or moth!
DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time in Mrs. Canning's class happens everyday after lunch recess time. Students choose books and then find comfortable places around the room to enjoy reading and practicing their favorite books!

Every day students in Mrs. Smith's class participate in a 10 minute "Take Time" activity. "Take Time" encourages students to have movement breaks to increase physical activity which can increase student achievement. "Take time" activities range from jumping over ropes while skip counting to singing and dancing.
Our class has been learning about life cycles of animals. We used the smartboard to learn about the life cycle of a frog and a plant. We all got turns to try out the smartboart. It was really cool how we could move the pictures around by just touching the smartboard with our fingers. We also used special markers that could make all kinds of lines (including rainbows!) to connect the stages of life and write on the board. There was also a special eraser that could move things around too! We think the smartboard is a great tool for learning!
