Kindergarteners in Mrs. Carey's and Ms. Coolidge's class celebrated "Polar Express Day" by wearing their pajamas to school. Mrs. Moody (The Elf) was invited to read the book, The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg, to the children. In the story all the children ride the "Polar Express" to the North Pole to visit Santa Claus. Inside the train the children enjoyed hot cocoa and chocolate nuggets. So...a kindergarten friend thought to bring in chocolate nuggets from Kennebec Chocolates to share with all the students. Students then lined up, held hands, and "choo chooed" down the hallway as they pretended to become the "Polar Express". All the children truly enjoyed experiencing this piece of literature which also earned the Caldecott Award!
Mrs. Carey's and Ms. Coolidge's classes completed their studies of Thanksgiving by hosting a Thanksgiving Feast in Laura Richards' gymnasium. Prior to the feast, students enjoyed center activities in the gym, such as making music with instruments like the Native Americans would have used, fishing for letters, building log forts, and making bead necklaces. The students also enjoyed making pumpkin bread and trail mix for the feast.
Then, it was time to "set sail" with a paper version of the Mayflower! Mrs. Moody, dressed as a turkey, led the procession of Pilgrims and Native Americans through the hall to the gym where they danced to the "Chicken Dance" and "feasted" on turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and pie.
Enjoy the pictures!
The week of October 15th was Fire Prevention Week. Laura Richard's Kindergarten classes learned about the dangers of playing with fire from a very special guest, Smokey the Bear!!
Look at our Kindergarteners on parade! They all made pattern designs on sandwich boards. Students made AB patterns, hopscotch patterns, and snake patterns using their names, stamps, sponge paints, and shape cut outs. On the day of their parade, students wore clothing that had patterns on them. Students marched through the halls and visited many classrooms. We all enjoyed their enthusiasm!! Being able to recognize patterns and continue them is one of the kindergarten math skills. Awesome job Kindergarten!

Mrs. Carey's class enjoyed learning about goods and services that come from a farm. Students absolutely loved having a farm in their classroom to experience being farmers! Learning outcomes for Farmer MacCarey's students centered around naming animals and fruits and vegetables that would be at the farm. Students visited staff members around the building on ponies to take orders for farm produce. Students had to write down orders and add up how much the order would cost the customers. Later, students delivered the produce to their happy customers! Thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped students to experience this wonderful learning!
In David Kirk's storybook, Miss Spider's Tea Party, a lonely spider wishes to have a tea party with some insects. But the insects are all afraid that she will eat them. Then one day she helps a moth whose wings become too damp to fly. They snack on tea and pie until the moth can once again fly away. He quickly tells his insect friends how Miss Spider helped him, and they all join her for a lovely tea party!
Mrs. Carey's class reenacted Miss Spider's tea party by they themselves becoming spiders and insects! They practiced having nice table manners as they served each other tea! How lovely indeed!
"It was a leprechaun I tell ye!!"
Mrs. Carey's kindergarten class was missing their special mouse from their classroom! Following a scavenger hunt of clues around the school written on shamrocks, Mrs. Carey's students finally found him in Mrs. Moody's office along with...GOLD! There was also a box of Lucky Charms cereal filled with objects that students would use for their math centers! Was this trickery really the doings of a leprechaun...or was it this staff person in disguise?! Hmmmm....
Mrs. Carey's Circus is looked forward to by the entire school every year. This year's show was SPECTACULAR!! The students worked on building gross motor skills by practicing and performing circus acts. There is so much planning, energy, and preparation put into this event and our entire school community applauds Mrs. Carey's class! BRAVO!!!

Mrs. Tarrio’s Class News
September 12, 2008
Dear Parents,
I hope your child has had a happy beginning to school. I really try to make our time here a fun and happy. These first few weeks are about nurturing a relationship with each child and building a learning environment.
We will be having share day next week. Every child has been assigned a share day. Your child has share day on ______________. That means that every week the share day is on that day. Every week your child will have a chance to either share some item brought from home or share a home talk idea. Below this newsletter is the share/home talk schedule for the month of September.
Our library day is now on Thursday! Please make every effort to make sure your child has their library book on Thursday. Remind your child on Wednesday night that tomorrow is library day and have them put their library book into their school bag. This will help nurture responsibility. Students do have library books signed out to their names but they are in their cubbies to look at during quiet reading time. Library books will be coming home next Thursday. We are working on responsibility at school too. Children show responsibility here by taking care of their school bags and by taking care of our classroom supplies. They also pick up after themselves during snack time and learning time.
Our mornings are full of learning more about the alphabet. Kindergarten students really should know most of their letters by the end of November and most of their letter sounds by then too. Many students already know letter names and many sounds. This might help to give you a sense of what is expected in Kindergarten. We will also learn a lot about reading this year. The Kindergarten curriculum has really changed since we have had an all day program. Students that meet the Kindergarten standard will be reading simple books that require sounding and blending by the end of the year. Every effort will be made to meet your child where they are and teach them the skills they need. We are currently working on rhyming too, a reading skill that have proven to help improve reading success.
In math, we will be working on patterning for a few more weeks. I am always incorporating number sense and counting in the curriculum. When you are “out and about” talk to your child about their environment. How many cows are in the field? How many forks are there on our table? Help them to associate an actual number to their words(“five” is 5 or “four and one”). This will help to build number sense and counting skills.
I will be calling about classroom volunteers very soon. Every helping hand is appreciated and I will be putting your time to good use.
Our classroom is really beginning to work well together. It really takes time for me to know every student and to build a learning and trusting atmosphere.
Have a terrific weekend!
Mrs. Tarrio
