Read-a-thon 2010

Our annual Read-a-thon, which is organized by the GEPTA, ended today with our awards assembly. All students who participated received a certificate and pencil. Students reading 1,000 minutes or more received a trophy...and an ice cream party! Then the GEPTA awarded students from each grade level who were the top readers! Each of these students read more than 2,000 minutes on their own. These students are pictured above. Classes that had 100% participation also received a popcorn party. A reminder to all, if your child participated he/she will receive 10 free tickets for the GEPTA's indoor carnival at LER on March 13th from 3:00-5:00. Thank you to all who supported the read-a-thon! In all our students read 97,035 minutes!!!

Celebrating Dr. Seuss 2010

On March 2nd Laura Richards School celebrated Dr. Seuss Day! Guest readers from our school community came in to read Dr. Seuss stories to each class. Many thanks to Mr. Tuttle (Director of Curriculum and Instruction), Becky Fles (School Board Vice Chair), Juan Lavalle-Rivera (Assistant Special Education Director), David Gruber (SFC US Army), Katherine Kollman (GEPTA Co-President), Jim Toman (Gardiner Chief of Police), Al Ghoreyeb (River View Principal), and Carolyn Goggin (Assistant to Superintendent) for taking time out of their busy schedules to make this day a wonderful celebration of reading.

Officer Toman even thought he was "taking care of business" by apprehending a "suspicious character" at LER!! Thank goodness Mrs. Cockrell's class convinced him that she was innocent!! No charges were filed! Whew!

In the afternoon the entire school enjoyed their 3rd annual Strawberry Shortcake desserts! The desserts were made to look like the Cat in the Hat's hat with red strawberries and white whip cream to symbolize the hat's stripes. A great day was enjoyed by all!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

Final Count: Hats for Haiti Day!

Laura Richards School community has been participating in a coin drive during the month of February. All the money will be sent to the American Red Cross at the end of the month to help the victims of the earthquake. The jar has filled twice!! Mrs. Brown's class alone collected $153.00! Another student gave all her birthday money, which totalled $30.00!! Yesterday we sent a deposit to the bank for $317.00! Today was Hats for Haiti day at LER. Students, staff, and parents donated a dollar to enjoy wearing a hat at school today. Stay tuned to find out how much we've collected in all! We may have "the little" people here at Laura Richards...but they have HUGE HEARTS!

Mrs. Duquette's 4 year old program was our grand finale for our coin drive for Haiti. As of our final count today (2-25-10), our school community has donated $650.39 to send to the Red Cross to help the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Thank you, thank you to all who supported this effort. The "Gift of Giving to Others in Need" is a wonderful life lesson for our students to experience here at Laura Richards School!
