LER Newsletter for January, 2010

Principal’s Notes
Dear Families,

Happy New Year 2010!! I hope you all had a wonderful and restful holiday season!

Since returning to school, all staff have been working to get students back into our school routine. January is typically a big month for learning as students tend to be more focused. Let’s hope the flu season is over for us and that Mother Nature cooperates as well!

Did you make any resolutions for 2010? Goal setting with your child is also a great idea! Setting realistic goals is the key to success. Here are some ideas to help your child be successful at school:

Read 5 days a week for 15 minutes.
Eat breakfast.
Go to bed by 8:00.
Eat a piece of fruit every day.
Get outside and play for 30 minutes every day.

Keeping track daily is important. Try using a calendar and having your child put a sticker or draw a happy face each day on the date to show progress towards his/her goal. Before you know it...the goal will become a lifestyle habit.

I want to thank families again for their continued support of the ongoing BoxTops fundraiser. Amazingly those 10 cent little coupons add up fast! We just received another check from BoxTops for $912.10. The funds are used to pay for enrichment activities for our students, like field trips, our recent reindeer visit, and special events like a puppet theatre show coming to us in late April. Thank you so much for your efforts to send in those tiny coupons!! If you haven’t participated, all it takes is ripping or cutting off a tiny coupon from products, like cereal, granola bars, diapers, or tissues, and sending them in to school. For more information, click on Boxtops 4 Education under "Support Our School" in the LER Navigation bar to the left of this page.

If you have any questions about this fundraiser...or have any other questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to give me a call. Again, Happy New Year!!

Yours in the service of children,
Karen Moody

GEPTA NEWS
Our next monthly meeting will be held January 12 at the Laura E. Richards School at 6:00 pm. Childcare will be provided and we might even have a door prize! We hope to see you there!

Please keep remember, even if you aren’t able to attend our monthly evening meeting, you are still welcome to join GEPTA! Perhaps you are interested in serving on one of our sub-committees? We have groups who work separately on our Family Fun Nights, Fundraising, Book Fairs/Reading Incentive, Scholarships, and more! Contact geptanews@gmail.com, Katherine at 582-8250, or Ellen at 582-9467 if you would like more information!

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped make LER’s Student Holiday Bazaar such a great success! It was wonderful to see the students’ excited little faces as they so carefully and thoughtfully shopped for the special people in their lives.

The GEPTA is once again planning the annual LER and RVCS Book Swap which will kick off our yearly Read-A-Thon in February. Stay tuned for more details but feel free to start collecting any of your gently used books that you might want to trade in for new-to-you ones! Details about drop off dates, etc. will follow in your child’s mailbox soon!

Star Students
Each week, we recognize a Star Student from each classroom. Teachers choose a student who has demonstrated the character skill of the month. Each Star Student receives a certificate, a special pencil, and has his or her picture taken! The character skill for the month of December was caring, and January’s is teamwork. Congratulations to our Star Students!

BoxTops and Campbell’s Update
Additional collection sheets will be coming home with students this week. Be sure to fill them up and send them back to school! Watch for the combined December & January classroom winners in next month’s newsletter!

Ongoing Fundraisers
Remember send in your BoxTops for Education, Campbell’s points, and empty ink & toner cartridges! Also, sign up for Shaw’s Community Rewards at www.shaws.com.
