Clubs, Teams, and Other School Offerings
GRMS ATHLETICS AND EXTRA CURRICULAR OFFERINGS
Intramurals
Open to all GRMS students. Students sign up at the beginning of each activity. Activities are during Falcon Time and include: 3 on 3 basketball, omnikin, tiger ball, volleyball, and floor hockey.
Girls Soccer
This sport is open to any girl entering grades 6-8. Students can sign up in the office prior to try outs or by attending a pre-season meeting. Practice is usually every weekday from 4:00-5:30PM. Games are usually twice a week, half home and half away. Girls will travel to and from away games by bus. All players are given a list of eligibility rules and expectations before the season starts. Cleats, shinguards, and mouth guard are required.
Boys Soccer
This sport is open to all boys entering grades 6-8. Students can sign up in the office prior to try outs or by attending a pre-season meeting. Practices are held after school from 2:00-4:DOPM. Games are usually twice a week at 4:00PM. Players must be able to attend practices and games, have cleats, shinguards and a mouthpiece.
Boys & Girls Club Soccer
This sport is open to boys and girls ages 5-14, with teams grouped according to age. Sign-ups are announced at the schools and in the newspaper, and are held beginning in June. All who sign up will be placed on a team. Teams practice once during the week and participate in one game on Saturday. Practices begin in August and the season ends in October. Players must have shinguards, and there is a fee.
Gardiner Youth Football
Open to grades 1-8, including Tiger-flag, instructional tackle, and tackle. Grades 1-6 play on youth teams. Grades 7 & 8 are sponsored by GYF but playas a school team. Sign-ups are in June and are announced at schools and in the newspaper. There is a fee.
Field Hockey
This sport is open to all students entering 7-8 grades. Students can sign up in the office prior to try outs or by attending a pre-season meeting. Practices are every day after school from 2:20-4:15 PM unless there is a game. There are 2-3 games per week.
Gardiner Youth Field Hockey
This sport is open to students in 2nd-6th grades. Practices and games are held once per week and on Sunday afternoons at Gardiner Area High School. Sign-ups are announced at schools and in the newspaper, and are held during the summer. A 5th & 6th grade no-cut travel team will be established in the fall of 2006, with a 10-game home & away schedule. Cross Country This is open to all students in grades 6-8. Sign-ups will be announced at school. There are no try-outs -- everyone makes the team. Practices are held after school every day. Players are expected to attend all practices and meets. Running shoes are a must.
Fall Cheering
Fall cheering is available for youth in kindergarten through 8th grade. Summer cheering clinics are also held. Sign-ups take place in the spring and are announced in the newspaper and at schooL Gardiner Youth Cheering sponsors grades K through 6. Grades 7 & 8 are sponsored by the Boys & Girls Club, and cheer for Gardiner Middle School football games. (See also Cheering, Winter Season)
Girls Basketball
This sport is open to all girls in grades 7 and 8. Students can sign up in the office prior to try outs or by attending a pre-season meeting. Practices are held from Monday through Thursday when there isn't a game. Players are expected to attend all practices and games unless excused by the coach.
Boys Basketball
This sport is open to all boys in grades 8. Students can sign up in the office prior to try outs or by attending a pre-season meeting.. Practices are Monday through Friday. There are 2-3 games each week.
Gardiner Youth Basketball
This program is open to boys and girls in grades 1-9. Sign ups are announced at school and in the newspaper, and take place in the fall. All students make a team. Teams will have one practice during the week and one game on the weekend. The coach will explain rules and guidelines at the beginning of the-season. There is a fee.
Wrestling
Open to all GRMS students Students can sign up in the office prior to try outs or by attending a pre-season meeting.. Practices are after school at 2:30 during February and March. Meets are on Saturdays. There are 18 weight classes, from 75lbs. up to 230 Ibs., so all size kids can wrestle -- big or small.
Gardiner Youth Hockey
GRMS Hockey Team players are selected from 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who are members of Gardiner Youth Hockey Association and play on a GYHA team. GYHA is also open to boys and girls of many age levels and abilities. Registration takes place in the fall and is announced at school and in the newspaper. There is a fee.
Cheering (Winter Season)
Cheering during the winter season is open to 7th and 8th graders. Tryouts are announced at school and held at the end of October. Twelve members and two alternates are selected. The season runs until early March. The squad cheers for all home basketball games and for competition. (See also Fall Cheering)
Track and Field
All GRMS students who sign up will make the team. Students can sign up in the office prior to try outs or by attending a pre-season meeting. Practices will begin in April Practices are held after school from 2:15 to 3:30 each day. Meets are once a week after school. All students are encouraged to join this growing sport.
Softball
For girls in grades 7 and 8. (Students can sign up in the office prior to try outs or by attending a pre-season meeting.. Practice is every day after school from 2:15 to 4:00. Games are after school, usually twice -a week.
Boys & Girls Club Softball
T -ball, minor league softball, major league softball, and senior league softball for all ages and abilities are offered through Boys & Girls Club. Sign-ups are announced through the schools. There is a fee. Contact: Boys & Girls Club, 582-8458

Gardiner Little League
T -ball and baseball for boys and girls of all age levels and abilities, are offered through Gardiner Little League. Sign-ups are announced in the newspaper and through the schools. There is a fee.
Boys & Girls Club Lacrosse
Lacrosse is open to youth in grades 1-8. There is an instructional team for grades 1-4, a team for 5th and 6th grade, a team for 7th and 8th grade, and a 7th & 8th grade girls' lacrosse team. Signups are announced at schools and in the newspaper. There is a fee, and some equipment is needed. Teams practice 2-3 times per week, with most games held during the week, and occasionally on weekends. Contact:Boys & Girls Club, 582-8458
Arts Chorus
Open to all students. Chorus meets as an elective class twice a week during Falcon period. They perform two to three times a year in public performances. Class attendance and performances determine~ students' quarterly grade. Solos and festivals are also offered.
Concert Band
Open to all students who want to playa band instrument. To sign up for band you must meet with the band director during Falcon period at the beginning of the year. There is a 6th grade band, and a 7th & 8th grade band, and bands meet during Falcon period. All members are expected to be at each rehearsal and performance. They are expected to have their instrument with them and in good working order at all times. End of year concerts include the Middle School Spring Concert and the All Bands Concert at the High School. A Holiday Concert is also held.
Drama
Open to all students. Auditions are held before each performance, and are announced at schooL There is a fall/winter, and spring production, which are both held at the High SchooL Practices are either after school or in the evenings, either at the Middle School or the High SchooL Requirements for drama include, fIrst of all, to have fun. When given a part or task, you are asked to commit to it and attend all practices.
Reflections
Open to all students. The National PTA sponsors this program. It offers an opportunity to .create pieces in musical composition, literature, and poetry, photography, and visual arts, based on a different theme each year. Local professionals from each fIeld judge the works and each participant receives comments and feedback from the judges. Each participant is recognized locally. GRMS winners receive prizes and the winner in each category goes on to the State, and then the National leveL Entry information is available in the office in late September and early October.
Falcon Favorites
Falcon Favorites is open to all students. To join you need to meet with the Advisor to discuss the books you've read and fIll out a brief form for each book. There are no formal meetings. They have a winter activity day and a spring one. You are required to read four (4) books from a library list to participate in the special activities such as bowling, sundae parties~ movies, etc.
Math Team
Open to all students at GRMS. Sign-ups are mid to late October. Practices are one or two afternoons each week. There are three math meets on Saturday mornings (usually one in November, January and March). Requirements include an interest in math, problem solving, and teamwork. Central Maine Math League determines competition rules.
Spelling Bee and Geography Bee
Contestants are selected from each homeroom to participate in the school-wide spelling and geography bees, with winners going on the regional and state levels, and beyond. Contact: (Students' home room teacher) 582-1326
Service Organizations PTSA
Parent / Teacher / Student Association
Open to all students~ patents, teachers and community members. To join PTSA just come to a meeting or send in PTSA dues. Forms are available at the school and are printed in each issue of the Blackboard News newsletter. The State and National PTA require dues, but you do not need to pay dues to participate in GRMS PTSA activities or to volunteer. PTSA holds meetings in the evening, only as needed (one or two per school year). We sponsor a school dance/ rec night as our only fundraiser to support our programs and to help students and teachers with-their requests. The PTSA sponsors Teacher Appreciation Week activities, the Blackboard News newsletter, and the Reflections art program that is open to all students.
Student Service Organization
Open to all students. Students need to get a referral from their homeroom teacher and sign an Expectation Contract. Meetings are once a month for all members and subcommittees meet as needed. All members must maintain an 80 overall average and fail no classes. This is the major fundraising organization for the schooL The members vote on how best to distribute the money to school clubs and organizations.
Yearbook
Open to all students. Sign up in September. Meetings are after school until 3:00 or 3:30. Entire staff meets in October, and then sections will have work sessions as needed. The majority of work sessions are January to mid-March to complete for March deadline. (Students need to think about their other commitments during this time.) Students will be chosen as homeroom reps to collect yearbook money daily in October, and to distribute books at the end of year.
Diversity Team
The Diversity Team offers an excellent opportunity for students who enjoy working with other people, wish to celebrate individual differences and have a desire to help the school become a place where all people treat each other with dignity and respect. It is a branch of the statewide Civil. Rights Team and stands for fairness and equality for alL The Team is open to any interested students. There are weekly meetings that are held during Falcon Time, conferences offered, and school projects to work on.
Falcon's Nest The school store is open during Falcon time every day and sells school supplies such as pencils, pens, notebooks, crayons, book covers, 3-ring binders and much more. Contact: Moe McNally, 582-6068 or mmcnally@sad11.k12.me.us
Dance & Rec Nights
GRMS Dance/ Rec Nights are held approximately one Friday evening per month, from 7:00 to ~:OO PM in the cafeteria and gym, and are sponsored as fund-raisers by various GRMS teams and clubs. School dress codes apply. There is a fee. Prompt pick-up of students by parents at 9:00 PM is a must.
