Coordinated School Health

Since June of 2001, MSAD 11 has been receiving a grant from the State of Maine. The money comes from the Fund for A Healthy Maine which is Maines share of the 1998 Master Tobacco Settlement. This grant has enabled MSAD 11 to implement an award-winning Coordinated School Health Program. In collaboration with Maine General Medical Center and the Healthy Communities of the Capital Area MSAD 11 is considered a leader in school health. The three primary goals of the grant are to increase physical activity, decrease tobacco use, and improve healthy food choices. The two most important ways that MSAD 11 can reach these goals is through policy and environmental changes. The committee that has been most responsible for implementing the program is the Community Health Advisory Board. Below is a list of major accomplishments since June of 2001:

  • New Health and Physical Education Curriculum Approved By School Board
  • 19 Assessments approved as part of the Local Assessment System
  • Walkable Schools - All schools are open for the community for walking from November 1st-April 1st each year.
  • Take Time - All five elementary schools are participating in this program where classrooms are integrating physical activity
  • Staff Wellness-An average of more than 150 staff participate yearly in the wellness programs.
  • Lifeskills ââ‚Drug prevention curriculum at Middle School implemented in 2002 has shown amazing results in decreasing drug use for Middle School students.
  • Walking School Bus-Three elementary schools participate in a weekly walking school bus program.
  • Indoor Walking Trails-MSAD 11 installed indoor walking trails in all schools.
  • Oral Health - During the 2003-2004 school year, more than 100 students were screened as part of the Maine Oral Health program.
  • Wellness Policy - Completed a model wellness policy that meets state and federal guidelines for the prevention of overweight and obesity.
  • Grants
    • Received a grant from the Federal Government to improve the quality of physical education and amount of daily physical activity. Amount: $377,000.00
    • Received a grant from the Maine Cardiovascular Health Program to increase physical activity: Amount: $5,000.00
    • Collaborated with the Adult Education Program to write a grant to connect literacy and wellness. Amount: $25,000.00
    • Received a grant from the Maine Nutrition Network to increase the amount of fruit and vegetable consumed. Amount $2,500.00
    • Received a grant from the American Cancer Society to attend four-year New England School Health Coordinator Leadership Institute. Amount: $5000.00
    • Other mini-grant from Maine Nutrition Network, Maine DOE, Healthy Communities of the Capital Area, American Lung Association of Maine, and Nike International to improve the amount of physical activity and healthy food choices. Amount: $7, 500.00
    • Yearly Healthy Maine Partnership Grant: 5 x $70,500.00 = $375,000.
    • Total Amount of Grants: $797,000.00
