Demonstration

Last week the GAHS Library Commons: Tigers Create!  team placed third in a Thomas Cup  competition with other high school students from across Maine. During the week-long challenge, the team  recreated  their favorite childhood story within a Minecraft world.

Beyond the design and storytelling, teams were evaluated for their use of coding, as well as their ability to explain that coding to others. Thomas College noted the collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creative skills demonstrated by the winning submissions.

Freshmen Jasmine Robertson and Braedyn Stockmar presented their recreation of Skippyjon Jones by Judith Byron Schachner to a Microsoft Minecraft expert during professional office hours hosted by Thomas College.

Braedyn asked,  "Is it hard to get a job at Microsoft?"

Kevin Zhu, Microsoft expert, replied, "Not if you do cool projects like this to show us what you can do."

Jasmine reflected, “It was so awesome to be able to demonstrate our work to a professional.”

Last week’s competition was the first of several science, technology, engineering, and innovation competitions including: cyber defense, esports, computer science, and crime scene investigation (CSI).

A special thank you to the MSAD #11 Technology Team for making this competition possible for our students.
