HT's second grade classes recently went on a field trip to the Wakefield Wildlife Sanctuary, a Kennebec Land Trust (KLT) property located in West Gardiner. Students learned about Earth's water cycle and how water can cause fast and slow changes to landforms. They also learned about soil erosion and how human and animal activity can alter the flow of water in ways that change landforms. Students learned that beavers can do this very effectively by building dams and then used their scientist skills to construct their own dams using clay (to serve as mud) and items found on the forest floor (sticks, pinecones, pine needles, and dirt) to build and test two models of a beaver dam. After observing how water flowed through or around their first dam, students worked in teams to modify their designs. Students then conducted a second test to observe how the water flow changed. In spite of the wet and cold, students had a great time and learned a lot of information. Many thanks to the Kennebec Land Trust, who provided this program at no cost, to our parent volunteers, and to HT's PTG, who covered transportation costs.
